  Chapter 11, Race against the clock “Lexi!” Thaddeus exclaimed in a panic as he immediately threw off his glasses and his heavy coat and Breanna caught them and Thaddeus ran toward the lake and dove in. He hastily spelled himself so he would be able to breathe under water and swam to where he saw Lexi last. But the current was so strong and Thaddeus found that strange because lakes don’t usually have currents. He was swimming all around but he had yet to find her! But something gave him the strength to persevere. He was just about to lose hope when he spotted her at the bottom of the lake! But then something else that’s strange happened. She started to float away. No! Thaddeus thought and swam a little bit faster. And a little faster. It took all of his strength, but Thaddeus managed to catch her and wrap his arms around her and get her to the top of the lake. It was difficult swimming her back to the shore as she was unconscious but he did it with all the strength he had left....

  Chapter 10, Karen’s lament As Lexi worked through the panic and the confusion and the shock, Karen giggled and Adam chuckled darkly. “Well, well, well. Look who finally woke up,” Karen said snootily. Lexi rolled her eyes. “Karen, what in the actual heck are you doing?” Lexi asked, sounding exasperated. “Oh, don’t waltz in here with your perfect life and then pretend not to know what’s going on!” Karen complained angerly, rolling her eyes. Lexi sighed. “First, I didn’t waltz in here, you captured me! Second, I have no clue what you’re talking about!” Lexi grumbled. “Oh, please! Captain of the cheer team, perfect grades, perfect friends, even more perfect boyfriend, perfect life!” Karen ranted before taking a long, shuddering breath. “Meanwhile I was alone and friendless and without the love life that you stole from me!” Adam came and put his arm around.   Chapter 9, Panic and confusion Thaddeus awoke with a start. He checked his clock on his bedside table. 5:00 am. He thought about going back to sleep, but pushed the thought away. There was no possible way he would be able to go back to sleep now. He picked up his phone and saw he had a text from Lexi. Thaddeus smiled and clicked open the message. But as he read the message, his smiled faded away. “Dear Thaddeus, I can’t do this. I’m sorry, but I’m too scared about a life with you. It’s only a matter of time before you yell at me again and treat me the way that Adam did. You’d be better off with Karen Keene than me. Never again yours, Alexa PIEPER.” Thaddeus frowned. He felt so sad and mad at the same time. He didn’t understand why she would say that. That fight was two months ago. But confusion drowned out everything else. He decided he would call her.   Chapter 8, The night things went wrong “Uh, that’s not good,” Bridgett gasped. Breanna nodded. “I feel bad for joking right now,” she said as she shook her head. Breanna’s phone started buzzing and it vibrated the table. “It’s Gabrielle,” Breanna said and answered. “You guys just saw that, right?” she asked in a panic. “Yeah, what are we going to do?” Breanna sighed. Lexi turned to Thaddeus. “We call them, right?” Lexi asked. Thaddeus nodded. “Definitely,” Thaddeus agreed. Lexi quickly picked up her phone and dialed Ben’s phone number. “Come on, pick up, pick up, pick up!” Lexi exclaimed softly as her forehead broke into a sweat and she clutched Thaddeus’s hand like a vice. “Hello?” Ben’s voice answered on the other end. Lexi exhaled. “Hi. Um, I’m sorry, Mad Maddy escaped?!” Lexi exclaimed. “Yeah! We saw her outside our window just a few minutes ago!” Ben sounded afraid, which was not a good omen.
