Chapter 12
On Lexi’s way home, she asked her mom if she could have
control of the music in the car. While she was put back together by Thaddeus’s
gentle hands and kind voice, she was still in a great deal of pain. The first
song Lexi played was the song she always heard her sisters listen to when they
had a difficult breakup and it was Picture to Burn by Taylor Swift. The next
one was Bad Blood also by Taylor Swift. (The part where it says, “Did you have
to hit me where I’m weak, baby, I couldn’t breathe and rub it in so deep, salt
in the wound like you’re laughing right at me,” Lexi related to on a spiritual
level.) When Before He Cheats by Carrie Underwood had just started playing,
Lexi turned to her mom, who was driving.
“Adam dumped me this afternoon.” Lexi’s mom gasped.
“What?! When?!”
Lexi winced.
“At lunch,” she explained. Her mom looked as though she was
processing this. And then Lexi explained exactly what had happened.
“Thaddeus came and consoled you and then went and defended
you?” her mom clarified. Lexi nodded and grinned. “That Thaddeus Hawthrone.”
Her mom chuckled. “You like him, don’t you?”
“I have ever since I was eleven. I just didn’t realize it
until today,” Lexi confessed. Then, Lexi started thinking. If Thaddeus had had
a crush on her this whole time, this year must have been nothing short of
torture for him. After all, she had just felt what that felt like today to see
your crush with someone else and the pain was so quick and powerful and strong,
it almost felt like she had been shot. Then she multiplied that sort of hurt by
eight months of seeing Adam and her together every day at school and was surprised
that Thaddeus hadn’t broken down sobbing on the floor yet. She also realized
that Thaddeus might have wanted to ask her out and then Adam asked her first.
Lexi gasped and sighed in sympathy.
“What?” her mom asked, turning her eyes to Lexi for a
second. Lexi shook her head.
“I think I have to make it up to Thaddeus in one way or
another.”
On the Monday after the breakup with Adam, Thaddeus was sure
that Lexi was still shattered, so on the way to school, him and his family
stopped at Walmart so Thaddeus could get Lexi her favorite flowers and
chocolate to cheer her up. Thaddeus got school only to find that all of the
fangirls were already sitting in their little corner and he hastily hid the
flowers behind his back. “What’s up, fangirls?” he said in a friendly tone as
he did a finger gun with his free hand. Lexi gave a him a little amused smile.
“Hi. There’s actually something I need to talk to you
about.” she told him, nodding her head towards the hallway so that they might
have some privacy. Thaddeus complied and followed Lexi until she stopped
walking. “I, um, know about the past year now.” Lexi whispered. Thaddeus’s eyes
widened.
“What? How do you know?”
Lexi shrugged.
“It was part me figuring it out, part me wedeling an answer
out of Gabrielle.”
Thaddeus gave a breathy chuckle.
“She’s not very good at keeping secrets, is she?” he
clarified. Lexi nodded her head.
“She’s really not.” she said right before she gave him a big
hug. “I’m so sorry.” Thaddeus was once again surprised as he tried to keep the
flowers out of her reach. He shook his head as she let go.
“No, you don’t have to be sorry. You liked someone else and
that is perfectly okay.”
Lexi beamed through her teeth.
“Well, in that case, I’m going to pose a question to you.
Will you go to homecoming with me?” Thaddeus smiled back and flushed light
pink.
“Yes! I’d love to!” he said, sounding excited and surprised
at the prospect. He hadn’t expected her to ask him to homecoming. Then
he decided he would give her the flowers and chocolate right now. Seemed like
the perfect moment to do it. Lexi giggled, blushed, and smiled all at once.
“Oh, thank you! What are these for?”
Thaddeus chuckled
dryly. “I was going to give them to you today to cheer you up, but now they can
be a celebration thing?” he said awkwardly, not sounding sure of himself. Lexi
threw her arms around him.
“Aww, thank you!” she squealed as she pulled away. “How did
you know these were my favorite?”
“Breanna told me.”
“Of course, she did.” Lexi laughed as she started walking
back to the gym and she motioned for Thaddeus to follow her.
“Hey guys!” Lexi called and the fangirls ran over to where
Lexi and Thaddeus were standing.
“What?” Bridgett wondered, looking kind of excited, like she
knew what Lexi was about to say.
“Thaddeus and I are going to homecoming together,” Lexi
explained with a huge, cheesy grin on her face. The fangirls squealed so loud
that people started staring.
“Yes!” Breanna cheered as she threw herself at Lexi and gave
her a big hug.
“We have been waiting for this moment for so long!”
Gabrielle and Kaylee chorused. Then Gabrielle noticed someone walking by.
“Hi, Oliver,” she almost swooned. The rest of the fangirls
and Thaddeus exchanged glances. But they would tease Gabrielle about this
later.
