Chapter 10
The whole pack was on their way to who knows where to find
Ben. They were all basically jogging, except for Mal, who was pregnant, and
Lexi, who couldn’t walk, let alone run. She could only hop on one foot, which
was what she doing with the aid of Thaddeus’s shoulder, though, he was so much
taller than she was, that she was practically being picked up off the ground
and put down again every time he took a step. They went all sorts of places
where they thought Ben might be, they even checked the old bunker Thaddeus had
taken refuge in during his villain times and Ben wasn’t even there. “Worth a
shot,” Thaddeus muttered. And then, Mal had a thought.
“Wait, why don’t we check the catacombs?” she said to the
others. Lexi’s eyes widened.
“The catacombs of DOOM? Do you remember what it was like in
there?”
“Lexi, you were never in there with us,” Mal reminded her.
Lexi rolled her eyes.
“I practically was. In my head.” Lexi argued quietly.
“Uh huh. So, catacombs?” Jay asked. Mal nodded and only
hoped Ben would be in there waiting.
Meanwhile, Ben was tied up and being held hostage like a
ballet student with a teacher who had no concept of time. “Mad Maddy? It’s been
you the whole time?”
Mad Maddy giggled with glee and Ben finally understood why
they called her “Mad” Maddy.
“Yep! Welcome to the conversation, Beasty Boy,” Mad Maddy
said snootily. Ben rolled his eyes at that stupid nickname.
“But, why?” he asked.
“Oh, my, don’t you know? You’re just as delusional as your
wife.” Mad Maddy smirked.
“Excuse me? You do realize that once I get out of this, I do
have the power to execute you for treason?” Mad Maddy just laughed.
“Please! No one’s gonna find this place! Evil shall triumph
over good!” she screamed to the sky. Or, rather, the ceiling of the catacombs.
Ben shook his head.
“No, good will win and you know it!” he argued. Mad Maddy
scoffed.
“Oh, my gosh! You’re such a goody-goody! What were you
raised on? Fairytales?”
Ben just shook his head and sighed. I wished Mal knew where
he was so she wouldn’t worry about him.
“We’re literally living in one.” Ben muttered. Mad Maddy
sniffed hotly.
“Maybe you are.” she said enviously. Ben started to say
something, but chose not to.
“So, Mal’s nightmares were right on the nose?” he asked
instead. Mad Maddy smiled proudly.
“Yes! I was the one sending them!”
Ben glared all of the sudden.
“You were the one making her terrified?!” he
yelled, his tone getting angrier. “We trusted and for gave you! What is wrong
with you?”
“I was just biding my time so I could get revenge!” Mad
Maddy said, as though this was obvious. Just then, Mal, Evie, Jay, Thaddeus and
the fangirls came hustling in and Ben sighed in relief.
“Well, well, well! Look who it is! It’s the turncoats and
the fan-brats!” Mad Maddy cackled. Breanna’s eyes widened and she looked down
at her shoes.
“She wrote the note.” She said in low tone. And then, Mad
Maddy noticed how Thaddeus and Lexi were standing, Lexi with her arm around
Thaddeus’s shoulders.
“Aww, look at those two! Finally manage to sweep her off her
feet, Thaddeus?” Thaddeus tried to keep his voice even and calm as he said,
“What are you talking about?”
“Oh, you think I wasn’t pretending to be Yen Sid when he was
in the hospital after he was recovering off my mind control spell to
frame Hadie? Seriously, how bad are you figuring this out?”
Unseen by Mad Maddy, Mal had untied Ben from the rope and
now Ben was standing free. Once Mad Maddy did notice, she gasped and snarled.
“What are you doing out of your rope?!” she exclaimed angerly.
“Exactly what I should be doing for the good of the kingdom.
Mad Maddy Mim, you are under arrest for treason to the crown!” Ben yelled.
“The game’s over, Maddy.” Mal told her. Mad Maddy scoffed.
“Oh, it’s only just begun,” she said as she turned into a
massive dragon. Mal gasped turned into a dragon as well. The fangirls couldn’t
believe that Mal had turned into a dragon right in front of their very eyes and
squealed, even though their obsession with Descendants had gone down slightly
since thy got older. Even Thaddeus was excited at prospect of the dragon\chick
fight that was about to go down. Mal was shooting fireball after fireball but
Mad Maddy kept evading every time, and when Mal’s guard was down, she shot her
in her right wing, making Mal crash to the ground, unconscious. She turned back
into a human once she hit the ground and Ben ran right over to her. When Mad
Maddy came down and transformed back into a human, Jay came over and hit Mad
Maddy up the side of her head with a frying pan. Rapunzel and Eugene, who he
had met the other week, recommended it as a combat tool. Ben came and scooped
Mal up in his arms, worrying like mad.
“Oh, no! Please, please be okay!” he exclaimed softly. And
he said running out of the catacombs, trying to run Mal to the hospital.
“Stop! I got you!” Breanna told him as she created a portal.
“Get in!” and within seconds they were standing front of the hospital and they
ran inside.
“Help! Mal got blasted in the arm with a fireball!” Ben
said, as if that was a normal thing to say. But maybe in Auradon it was. The
receptionist was very kind and took them right back and the fangirls, Thaddeus,
Evie, and Jay were told to stay in the lobby. Lexi figured that this might be
the time to ask Thaddeus something that had been on her mind.
“Thaddeus?” He turned.
“Yes?”
“What did Mad Maddy mean when she said something about you
sweeping me off my feet?”
Thaddeus panicked and thought up something quick.
“She meant how we were walking. You know how villains like
to tease their enemies like that,” he lied. Thaddeus absolutely hated lying to
her, but what choice did he have in this situation? Lexi wasn’t sure she
believed this story, but she didn’t push. “How are things with Adam?” Thaddeus
wondered. Lexi frowned.
“Fine.” She sighed. Thaddeus raised his eyebrows.
“That doesn’t sound fine. I haven’t seen you smile in long
time,” he prompted gently. Lexi shook her head.
“I’m fine.” Lexi whispered. Thaddeus chuckled softly and
elbowed Lexi in the arm.
“I know you better than that, fangirl. And you’re a very bad
liar,” he said. Lexi scoffed.
“I am not.” She argued. Thaddeus chuckled again.
“Lex, that’s a good thing. What’s up?”
Lexi sighed with resolve.
“It just Adam! He disappears all of the time and he never
has time for me anymore!”
Thaddeus glared slightly.
I knew that guy was trouble, the little rat. He doesn’t
deserve to date someone like Lexi, he thought.
“Maybe you should talk to him about it,” Thaddeus suggested.
Lexi nodded.
“Yeah, probably.” About fifteen minutes later, (wow, they
work quick!) Ben came back and said, that Mal and the baby were just fine, but
Mal did have a third degree burn on her forearm and they were lucky it wasn’t
worse. Everybody breathed a big sigh of relief, especially Evie and Jay.
Later, when Lexi got home, (Thaddeus had held her during the
portal ride and helped her back home,) her mom instantly questioned why she was
limping and then took her to the hospital. After her ankle was X-rayed, Lexi
told her mother what had happened and that she wouldn’t be going to Auradon
every Wednesday anymore.
“Finally,” her mom sighed.
“It was fun, though,” Lexi admitted. Then Lexi had another
thought that she’d been having for a couple of months. “Mom, I think Thaddeus
has a crush on me,” she confessed. Her mom nodded.
“He does.” Lexi’s jaw dropped.
“Wow, that’s- wow,” she said in shock.
“How are things going with Adam?” her mom asked.
“They’re okay. But I did something stupid,” Lexi whispered.
“Oh?” her mom said. Lexi nodded and explained what happened
in the forest and how she had asked Thaddeus to hold her hand.
“Really? You’re fine, you were scared.” Her told her. But
Lexi still felt like she should tell Adam about it.
