Chapter 1, Permission
A few weeks after Thaddeus got home,
he was invited over to Lexi’s house for dinner. Lexi had called him and asked
him if he wanted to come over and before he had accepted, he had to ask a
serious question. “Are your brothers’ home?” he asked.
“No,” Lexi had replied.
“I’ll be there!” he had said
enthusiastically. Lexi started laughing.
“You know they might have forgiven you
now,” Lexi giggled. Thaddeus let out a disbelieving chuckle.
“Yeah, right after they ambush me as
soon as I walk in the door,” Thaddeus joked. Lexi laughed even harder. So,
Thaddeus came over for dinner. They had spaghetti and meatballs with lima
beans. Lexi had told Thaddeus that lima beans were her favorite and Thaddeus
had wanted try them, but he never got around to it. When he tried them, he
loved the taste and the texture.
“I love these!” Thaddeus told Lexi and
Lexi grinned.
“Yay! Almost everybody in my family
hates them! Even Conner and James. I have seen them eat weirder things, I
really don’t get it,” Lexi sighed. Thaddeus chuckled and slung an arm around
Lexi’s shoulders. They ate dinner, which very tasty, and then dessert was
served. Lexi’s mom had made trifle. An English dessert. Thaddeus had never tried that either but he
loved that too! “This is really good, Mrs. Piper, thanks for having me over,”
Thaddeus said politely. Mrs. Piper beamed.
“You’re welcome, Thaddeus! You’re welcome over here anytime,” Mrs. Piper replied, happily. Lexi smiled and kissed Thaddeus’s cheek.
“I need to go to the bathroom. I’ll be right back” Lexi said
and walked out of the dining room. Thaddeus’s palms started to sweat and his heart started to pound painfully in his chest, but he
knew it was now or never to talk to Lexi’s father.
“Um, Sir?” Thaddeus said shyly. Lexi’s
dad smiled.
“You can just call me Christopher,
Thaddeus,” he said, smiling. Thaddeus nodded.
“Okay, Christopher. I just wanted to
say, I love your daughter very much and she is my everything and I can’t imagine
my life without her. Not only is she the love of my life, she’s also my best
friend and I would love to spend the rest of my life with her and I promise to
love her forever and be true to her forever. But before I asked for her hand in
marriage, I wanted to do so with your blessing,” Thaddeus said very
respectfully. Lexi’s dad smiled.
“Nothing would make me happier than to
know that my little girl would be with somebody that cares so much for her and
will be faithful to her. And I would love to have someone as respectful as you
as my son-in-law. You have my blessing,” he said warmly. Thaddeus exhaled.
“Thank you, sir! I mean Christopher,” Thaddeus said. Just then, Lexi came back from down the hall and sat down at her seat again.
“Hey!” she said to everybody. Thaddeus smiled.
“Hey, yourself!” he replied. Lexi
giggled. But then she noticed something.
“Thaddeus, you look so happy! And Mom,
why are you crying?” Lexi’s mom brushed away tears of joy from her eyes.
“Oh, I’m fine,” she said happily.
“What did you guys talk about?” Lexi asked, but she had a feeling that she knew what they just talked about.
Thaddeus chuckled.
“Oh, nothing. I’m just always happy to
see you,” Thaddeus said. Technically, that was also true. But he couldn’t tell
her the whole truth. But Lexi was suspecting that Thaddeus had spoken to her
father about something very important. After they had dessert, they played some
board games and then Thaddeus left and went back home. Now, he was going think
up how and when and where he was going to propose!
