Chapter 10, Just like magic

“Um, who’s Karen?” Ben asked, sounding a little bit concerned.

“She’s this girl in our family school. She hates me,” Lexi explained. Ben nodded.

“Oh, I see,” he said, still sounding a little weirded out.

“So, there is definitely a lot of mischief going on right now,” said Mal, changing the subject. The pack nodded.

“Do you think we’re going to have to save the kingdom again?” Gil asked.

“Yes, I do,” said Ben. Gabrielle raised her eyebrows.

“Do we get to help with this 'saving the kingdom'?” she asked excitedly.

“Um- Mal was saying but Ben cut her off.

“Sure, if you can handle it,” Ben said to them. Mal looked at him as though he was getting himself into something he did NOT want get himself into, but she didn’t say anything. The fangirls started squealing really loudly. 

“Mal, do you think you actually help me learn to control my magic? If I don’t learn to control my magic, when I have a panic attack, I might just burn my house down,” Lexi said. Mal nodded when she got a look from Ben. 

“Yeah, your house burning down would be a problem,” Mal said. Lexi sighed with relief. 

“Can we start now?” she asked. Mal nodded again.

“Okay, first what you need to do, is learn to control your emotions,” Mal said. Lexi nodded.

 

On and on, Lexi went through her learning to control her magic lessons and Mal was actually having a really good time with it. Until Lexi brought up Ben. “So, how does it feel to be engaged to the King of Auradon?” Lexi asked. Mal shrugged.

“I just can’t wait to get married to him finally,” Mal sighed. Lexi smiled.

“I can’t wait for that either!! You’re so lucky!! He’s so hot! I’d marry him in a heartbeat!!” Lexi squealed. Mal got a glare on her face. 

“What did you say?” Mal asked. Lexi raised her eyebrows.

 “I said you’re lucky and that I would marry him in a heartbeat.” Mal started boiling with anger.

“Go away and never come back!” she shouted at Lexi. Lexi turned around and ran as fast as she could.

 

Ben was figuring out something to do with evacuation for the kingdom, when something caught his attention. Mal was shouting something at Lexi. Ben lowered his eyebrows in confusion. Why was Mal shouting? Then, Lexi was running the other way, as fast as she could it looked like. Ben stood up and stopped her before she ran past him. “Where are you going? Is everything okay?” he asked. Lexi was panting. 

“Away. Far away,” Lexi said. Ben raised his eyebrows.

“Why?” he asked.

“Mal got angry. I’ve seen what she looks like when she’s angry,” Lexi explained. Ben lowered his eyebrows again. 

“What does she do when she’s angry?” he asked, concerned.

“She turns into a fire breathing dragon and everything. I’m so out of here!!” she exclaimed, and kept running. Ben didn’t say anything to Lexi, but under his breath he said, 

“Smart move, kid,”

 

Mal was still breathing heavily from anger, when Ben showed up next to her. “Okay, what’s wrong?” Ben asked her. Mal shrugged. 

“What? Nothing. Nothing’s wrong. Go back to your ruling the kingdom, that’s your job, isn’t it?” Mal asked. Ben shrugged too.

“It’s your job, too. What’s going on?” he asked again. Mal growled. She didn’t take much convincing to talk about it. 

“Haven’t you noticed?! Lexi has a crush you!” Ben raised his eyebrows and gasped in mock surprise. 

“No, really? Well, the fact that she’s always giggling and blushing if I so much as say ‘hello’, kind of a dead giveaway,” Mal looked at him in shock.

“This doesn’t bother you?” Mal asked. Ben shook his head.

“No,” Ben replied. Mal looked at him, amazed.

“How? Why?” Mal asked. Ben shrugged.

“Well, not to sound conceited or cocky or anything, but I am used to it," Ben said. Mal sighed.

“This shouldn’t be bothering me either, but it is,” Mal sighed. Ben raised his eyebrows.

“I think that you are feeling possessive,” Ben said. Mal glared at him.

“I am NOT!” Mal exclaimed. Ben gave a knowing chuckle.

“Yeah, okay. How did you feel when she started flirting with me?” He asked.

“Um, shocked and angry, and this proves nothing!” she said as Ben looked at her as if to say, “Yeah, this proves everything”

“You’re just proving my poiiiint” he said in a sing-song voice. Mal sighed with exasperation and sat down. Ben smiled and shook his head as sat down with her. “Look, how I see it, is she’s eleven, she’s going through puberty, and she’s discovering feelings that she never knew existed,” Ben explained gently. Mal lowered her eyebrows in confusion. 

“Did you start having a crush on Audrey at eleven?” she asked. Ben shrugged. 

“Yes, I did,” he said. Mal sighed again.

“Figures,” Mal said. Ben shook his head and grabbed her hand sweetly.

“But I started crushing on you at sixteen. And I never let go of those feelings” he said sweetly. Mal giggled and blushed, in spite of herself. Ben chuckled.

“See, you sound like Lexi!” Ben teased. Mal laughed and kissed him on the cheek.

"Wow! I feel better! How do you do that?" Mal exhaled. Ben smiled.  

"Thanks! Go apologize," he said, turning serious. Mal sighed.

 "I felt better for 2.3 seconds, thanks for that. Oh, you're such an Auradon kid!". Ben smiled at her.
